The little story of toile de Jouy

It is in 1760, in the Yvelines, that begins the formidable adventure of the toile de Jouy. At the time, the craze for the Indians, these traditional oriental cotton fabrics with very bright colors and flowery motifs, is very strong. The Jouy-en-Josas factory will quickly contribute to the reputation of this 100% cotton fabric, with bucolic prints. The first comic book was born!

Multiply in series, the generally monochrome designs on ecru background or inversely reveal sometimes a family lunch in the shade of a tree, a horse riding in the forest or a fruit picking in the trees.

Field scenes or everyday life, drawn from philosophical or literary works such as the fables of La Fontaine, historical facts or mythological or pastoral inspiration, it is the whole history of France that is inscribed through the famous Cotton fabric.

Over the centuries, these fabrics found their letters of nobility and the toile de Jouy becomes a must in bourgeois interiors.
