The irresistible charm of the toile de Jouy

Born in the 18th century, the toile de Jouy knew how to cross the time, carried by the finesse and the diversity of its motifs to sketches, but also by its legendary quality. Exit the image of grandma's room a little old-fashioned, the toile de Jouy" is new and looks set to occupy the front of the stage!

Zoom on this stuff like no other that has not said its last word and reflects throughout the world, good taste and traditional know-how in the French.

The little story of toile de Jouy

It is in 1760, in the Yvelines, that begins the formidable adventure of the toile de Jouy. At the time, the craze for the Indians, these traditional oriental cotton fabrics with very bright colors and flowery motifs, is very strong. The Jouy-en-Josas factory will quickly contribute to the reputation of this 100% cotton fabric, with bucolic prints. The first comic book was born!

Multiply in series, the generally monochrome designs on ecru background or inversely reveal sometimes a family lunch in the shade of a tree, a horse riding in the forest or a fruit picking in the trees.

Field scenes or everyday life, drawn from philosophical or literary works such as the fables of La Fontaine, historical facts or mythological or pastoral inspiration, it is the whole history of France that is inscribed through the famous Cotton fabric.

Over the centuries, these fabrics found their letters of nobility and the toile de Jouy becomes a must in bourgeois interiors.
Today, the great names of fashion and decoration reinvent it and divert it by giving it a second breath and new tonalities.

A little advice not to overlook : avoid over-dosing. Do not attempt the combination wallpaper, bed linen and cushions at the risk of giving the room a look too kitsch.
